Last week I focused on some great wines that I tried at the Seven Mountains Wine Cellars near State College, this week I want to mention a good wine I drank from California, another Carneros region wine, which did not know till I did a little research for this article. It was from Cline Cellars in Sonoma California a 350 acre winery. Most of the Viogniers I have tried before have been French from the Rhone area, and I generally like this type of wine as it tends to be quite full of fruit without being cloyingly sweet. This California wine did not disappoint, although I found when I opened it it has less flavor, drunk with some cheese, than the next day, when it developed and went really well with a vegetable curry we made. To me the flavor was distinctly apple, although the label talks of pineapple, peach and apricot flavors accented by floral and citrus notes. But, if you like white wines this is worth looking for in the State store where i picked it up on a special a little while ago.
Another nice wine we drank this week was a Placido Chianti, good well developed flavors, deep rich red color and it went really well with a pork tenderloin that a friend had cooked marinated with mustard and herbs.
Well, I am looking forward to seeing what we discover this week, at the moment I am drinking an old favorite from when I was young. In England I think we drink a little earlier than over here, a Soave wine from Italy. When I first lived on my own when I was eighteen I drank a lot of Soave and Frascati, cheap wines that were plentiful and available in the local supermarket on the way home; great as an aperitif or when you were cooking, easy on the taste buds and not too sweet but that cut through some of the richness of Italian dishes with tomato sauce. Anyway, till next week, good drinking and let us know what is on your table.
