"The Most Beautiful Spring Garden in the World"
The Philadelphia Flower Show 2017 was focused on Holland this year, but the Keukenhof makes a rather grand boast. This weekend I got to check it out and tick it off my bucket list. Trudy is the gardener in our family but over the years I have come to appreciate the art and the beauty created.
I was also glad to know that was a fritalaria hanging above the tulips and daffodils above. Whilst they say a picture is worth a thousand words, there are some facts to offer first.
Actually means the kitchen garden. Was the site of a large estate, now is an advertising/marketing venue for the Dutch Tulip trade. Over 7 million, yes 7 MILLION bulbs, tulips, daffodils and hyacinths fill 32 hectares, that is almost 80 acres with color, fragrance and wonderful vistas as well. Scattered among these are sculptures, inspiration gardens, pavillions filled with orchids, cut flowers and all sorts of other flowers and plants. The value of the flowers planted is staggering. Surrounding the gardens are bulb fields which are wonderful to see.
It can take many years to develop a new tulip, maybe as many as 16 before there are enough to commercialize it.
Tulips come from the middle east, the word Tulip comes from the Persian word for Turban as the tulip looked like a turban. Because of the value of the tulips art was created to showcase them in Dutch Delft predominantly. They cost as much as a house or fast car today back in the 17th century, then it all collapsed. It was not till the 19th century that tulips again took hold when more people had gardens and the tulip industry we know today was born.
I got there early on Saturday morning, and as the day progressed more and more people filed in filling the paths and walkways. I took over 100 photos, so here are just a few. This was one of the most enjoyable days of my life, the fresh air, the views, the colors it was all amazing.
The Keukenhoff is in the Netherlands, and is only open from March 23 to May 21 2017. They lift the bulbs and replant every year. You can see more information at www.Keukenhof.nl.
