Berwyn Village is like a breathing organism in that it expands and contracts. I have lived here for the past 20 years and when we moved in frankly Berwyn Village was a place that looked as if it had been left behind. Business open and close, shop fronts look run down, landlords allow their buildings to deteriorate and this all affects the village and how it is perceived by those passing through.
As President of the local busines association I have found the lack of interest of business owners to be involved in the local community shocking. At the same time, those who are involved give a lot and want to see improvements. Some of the issues are that the Village straddles two townships, Tredyffrin and Easttown and getting both on board to allow improvement is challenging, especially if the business community is divided, which it is.
But, if you actually look closely Berwyn Village has a lot going for it, there are improvements, there are lots of businesses opening on Lancaster Avenue and on side streets, restaurants, dry cleaners and banks, we even have our own theatre and Berwyn Village has lots of history behind it. At the same time we need a single vision that the business community will get behind to see the best that this village has to offer come to light. We need to create a place that is attractive to those passing through and that makes them stop, not just for an ice cream, but to shop and eat and wander through our village and take full advantage of the benefits that those of us who live close by already know about.
Currently we see Wawa applying to open a new gas station and store on Lancaster Ave in Berwyn, we see a new restaurant filling a gap that opened recently and there are plenty of opportunities for those who want to open a business here, maybe a coffee shop?
