Wine down Wednesday

Sangria - usually people think of Sangria as being cheap red wine with some soda in it, but it is much more than that, especially if you have ever been to Spain and enjoyed it there. As I mentioned last week, it is often drunk through the hot summer months and can be refreshing or even a stronger drink as I will discuss below.

Red Sangria

Usually red, using red wine, it can be mixed with seltzer water if the wine is very sweet or a lemon lime soda, and oranges and lemons are usually steeped in the wine ahead of time to give the drink a fruity flavor. I love Sangria, especially if it is spiked a little which I found in Spain often happened with a little brandy to give a bit of an extra kick to the drink. Often served in large jugs, the soda is added along with ice at the last moment before serving.

However, when we were in Spain I discovered and was introduced to White Sangria

White Sangria

Made in the same way, this can be a little more refreshing being generally a little lighter, like a spritzer really. Like the red it can also be spiked a little for bigger kick. Enjoy, I did over this last weekend.

Good morning, Nick and Trudy- I love to "wine" down just as much as I love to "down wine."

Nick & Trudy, I had my first taste of white sangria a couple of months ago, light and refreshing as you've said.  The red is going to need some experimentation to find the right brandy kick.

I also love Sangria-  such a greast summertime drink, I prefer it w/steeped fruit.  I'll have to look for (or perhaps make) the white version, I've never had that but imagine it would be a good BBQ beverage

I just love Sangria when we went there a couple of years ago we also had Sangria made with Cava. It was delicious. We recently went to Vegas and had some great Sangria at Julian Serrano's restaurant.
