Valley Forge in Winter

At the birth of the nation after a battle at Brandywine where the British relentlessly pushed forward towards Philadelphia the defeated American Colonial Army retreated to Valley Forge to protect the crossings and regroup. It is a famous point in American History. Did the British realize how weak the Americans were and how easily they could have crushed them by bringing them to another fight?

The lure of Philadelphia was too great, and while the Americans sheltered and reformed from a rag tag militia into an army. The British entered Philadelphia.

Eventually that newly formed army took on the might of an Empire till they withdrew.

During that time of shelter at Valley Forge they wintered during one of the coldest spells, the recent snow falls allowed me to get some footage that shows how it might have looked in Revolutionary times. Enjoy.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel it was sunny this morning and I was hoping it would not be so bright when I shot it, you can see I am squinting from the brightness. Happy how it turned out, love the park so happy to have such a wonderful resource so close by.

Nick- now that's making good use of all of the snow you've received! Hearing the wind in the background only added to painting the picture of how bad it must have been then. Loved your video!  Hard to picture them sleeping on those "shelves."

Hi Nick

I enjoyed your video, despite how cold it looks. One has to marvekl and what our Army had to suffer with in Valley Forge that winter...and having seen those cabins it's even more amazing to me!

Kathy Streib other than a fire, they really did not have much, it was pretty brutal, hard to imagine, but maybe men and women were tougher back then.

Lisa Von Domek I hope so, though they are promising us one more go around early next week.

It is sunny today, maybe the "Spring Forward" will encourage the weather so  hoping Debbie Reynolds

Patricia Feager just putting into effect what I learn on AR. So glad to hear your compliments.

Jeff Dowler totally agree as I said to Kathy Streib I thjink those men from that period were much tougher. After having been without power for a few days I know life is different, so how it was back then was very different.

Amanda S. Davidson I was on the way into the office thinking about what to post, and I have photos from winters past, but thought how about a video, it is Thursday so ran up there and voila.

Sheila Anderson I did not know that, so glad you enjoyed the post.

I was surprised how little there was up at Valley Forge considering how much we had, the temperatures with the sun are melting it pretty quickly Joan Cox

What a great way to show your neighborhood to the world.  I especially enjoyed seeing the huts and being reminded that life was difficult then and houses were not the same as we have now.
