Like Minds

Last year, 2018 I challenged myself to walk one of the Camino de Santiago routes, just under 400 miles walking from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela. I ended up walking 532 miles reaching Santiago de Compostela and carrying on via Muxia to Finisterra (the end of the earth).

This was really a momentous life challenge and life achievment moment for me. It took me about a month and returning to every day life has been a challenge. Walking every day, on average 22-23 miles, leading a very simplistic life, get up, walk, drink coffee, eat breakfast, walk, more coffee, walk, eat lunch, walk, find somewhere to sleep, wash, clean your clothes, eat dinner, sleep and repeat. In among all that walking there was a lot of thinking, great conversations, meeting new people, bonding with many, and a lot of introspection as well.

Life back here in the States is very different, and I was struggling. I joined some Facebook groups, and also a local meetup group of Camino walkers and potential walkers. Saturday morning my phone beeped with a message that the Saturday hike was on regardless of the weather. This being my first notification for some reason of the walk I quickly got dressed and headed out the door.

Meeting up with others who have hiked other Camino routes, there are many, but understood the challenges of returning home, and readjusting was wonderful and very helpful. Below are some photos from our hike, it was a little overcast and as we returned to our cars the heavens opened, so we all got a little wet as we headed to the home of one of the hosts for some lovely warm soups, salads and breads. It was a a great time. We met At Marsh Creek State Park

Good afternoon Nick. I would imagine that re-acclimating is difficult and I am happy that you found this group.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543

On the day you walked "one of the Camino de Santiago routes, just under 400 miles walking from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela," you must have had a lot of thoughts on your mind for that road looks like it is filled with history and inspiration. What an adventure! I feel blessed just to read all about it and can vicariously feel the fog and the excitement that you experienced on your remarkable adventure. I only wish I could have done the same thing in my lifetime.

Congratulations on setting a phenomenal goal and having it accomplished. Obviously, you're not the same man you were before you started your venture, you're even greater and wiser too.

Nick, I am sure it's been very difficult to reacclimate and think it's great you found a group of people that understand what you're feeling.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP there is definitely an interesting energy along the Camino Routes, they flow across Europe, photo below, and everyone who walks says they are affected in some way. Many of those walking are older, so there is nothing stopping you.European Camino Routes

Amanda S. Davidson it is a godsend to me right now.

I had no idea about your history and about this monumental task. Are you going to now write a book about your life's challenge finished?

Nick, what a journey! I read this when  Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP reblogged your post.  You have definitely inspired me to get back into walking.

I'm so happy you found this group, Nick and I do hope they are helpful in sharing their experiences and tips on coming back to the States. I'm sure this is quite similar to the experiences that our military have when they return from deployment.

Happy Monday!

Lynn B. Friedman thank you and Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP thank you for the re-blog and the very kind words, never been described as the incredible AR hulk before.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate thank you, many books have been written about the Camino and many videos and movies, watching one last night it finished with the words The second part of the Camino begins when you return home. That I have found to be very true. I think I have much still to learn before I write anything.

Endre Barath, Jr. I know you understand, very tempting to hope on a plane and go back, I almost said home...Freudian slip.

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® I love it, miss every day I don't get a long walk in, the cold makes it hard and the time it takes with our crazy lifestyles, but I have to adapt my life to make it work for me.

Debe Maxwell, CRS I would hesitate to make that comparison, although there are similarities. I think what our servicemen and women have gone through is different. But, I have found people really don't understand what you are talking about and as I readmore and talk with others it is a common occurence. There is even a Facebook closed group to allow post Camino walkers to discuss their returns.
