What To Do Before Your Home Stager Comes…7 Tips You Can Use
When many people think of Home Staging they think of vacant homes. However, staging or styling an occupied home can have an impact as well.
I love staging these homes because it gives me more interaction with my clients and allows for much more creativity.
So often, the sellers are apprehensive and not sure what to expect. Who is this person coming into my home and telling me what to do??
Relax! Stagers are there to help you get your home sold in a timely manner and to help you maximize the investment that you have in it.
Here’s what you can do to make the most of your Home Staging Consultation…
1. Change your mindset from Home to House.
Once you’ve made up your mind to sell, it’s time to start thinking of our beloved home as a commodity that you will be selling. So many sellers can’t bring themselves to paint over the mural they in their child’s room, or the leopard entry wall they did. I get it! But take a photo and frame it if you must. Don’t let that taste specific feature derail the sale of your home.
2. Don’t even consider painting or removing anything until you speak with the stager.
We want to help save you money and try to use what you have. Let us see what you have first. And we can also suggest a paint color that will enhance your rooms.
3. Go ahead and remove items you know need to be thrown out.
There are some items you have that can’t be used, repurposed, or repositioned. Go ahead and remove those so that we can see your space.
4.Clear your schedule
You’re paying for the Stager’s time so you’ll want to be able to focus on what they say. Try not to schedule the consultation just before you have to leave to pick up the children from school. Consultations can last anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 hours or more.
5. Remove distractions.
We love our pets and of course, our children, but you will need to be able to give your attention to the stager to make the most of your time with them. I have given consultations with 3 large dogs following and wanting to jump all over me, as well as wee ones wanting to show me every item in their room.
Remember that you’re paying for the time and you’ll want to make the most of it.
6. If you have a friend or relative over for moral support or maybe they’re just curious, give them a pad and pen and ask them to take notes only.
There have been too many times when a very well-meaning friend wanted to show us their knowledge of staging and what they learned on the cable channel. It’s wonderful that home staging and the importance of first impressions have been helped through these shows. However, it’s YOUR consultation and you’re paying the stager for THEIR information and experience.
7. Take notes,ask questions and listen.
If you’re willing to attempt what a stager suggests, your chances of getting your home sold for the price you want can increase. I tell all of my clients that they can text me with a question after I’ve left. Or, if they’re out buying an item they need, they can text me before they purchase it.
