It's not for sale or is it? Chester County Antiques Show 2019

What is your response when you are told something that catches your eye is not for sale?

As you know my background was antiques, my family were antiques dealers and we exhibited at many shows around the world. We have many stories about sales and things for sale.

Growing up my father had a good friend who was an antique dealer in Dorset, England. He always had stories about a colleague who had a shop across the road from him.

One went like this. The car was loaded with a drop front desk, lying on its back in the back part of a Volvo station wagon. It had a blanket loosely thrown over it, not hiding much. The door of the shop was open as was the back of the car. It looked as if the desk was either being unloaded or loaded into the car.

Antiques in boothAlong comes a shopper, they see the desk, and take a closer look, obviously attracted they go to the door of the shop. They ask, without entering if the desk in the back of the car is for sale. The shop keeper, would come to the door and hem and haw about how he was taking this desk home as it was such a fine example and it was not for sale.

Now, there could be two reactions, disappointment and acceptance, or what usually happened a determined buyer who opened negotiations to purchase something that was not for sale. After a period of time, the piece would be sold, for a significant amount higher than the normal going price as the shop owner had been persuaded to part with this wonderful piece he was taking home.

I have many similar stories along similar lines. A famous art dealer would allow clients to glimpse a painting in a curtained off area and tell them this was not for them. They too had to have it, having been told it was not for them.

Coming soon! Private Listings. Pocket Listings. Make me move postings. For sale by owner listings. Multiple offers. Do these generate similar feelings? In some yes, others will just move on and consider what is for sale now. How can we as listing agents generate that need in buyers to have to have a house when it might be a challenge to sell.

Just a thought for the day as the Chester County Antiques Show is held this weekend at Church Farm School on Lancaster Avenue my brother will be exhibiting and you can definitely find things for sale on his booth. But this show has some wonderful items that will fit into any Chester County or Main Line home whether your style is modern, mid-century or antique.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - There a lot of truth to what you say in these stories! I'd like to theorize it is the lure v the conquest. It reminds me of many years ago I went to the Portland, Maine mall with a lady from summer camp where I worked at the time. I saw a dress in the window of a shop that I thought was absolutely stunning! I stopped inside and the clerk told me it wasn't for sale. It was just on the mannequin and would be shipped off in a few days somewhere else and she didn't have any more in stock. What was even more disappointing is that the lady I was with told me, you couldn't afford it anyway. The next day I went back to the store and the dress was still in the window. I asked what size the dress was it was a size 3, my size at the time. I tried it on, it fit, and I paid without knowing what it cost or trying to renegotiate the price. Not only did the dress lure me in, but I also conquered it too!

Sheila Anderson I think we just need to think about how we can use it, it may look different, like I said to Nina, a limited opportunity, limited showing time, etc.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - You are so wise and wonderful! It was the lesson I learned from the other lady who didn't have any business telling me I couldn't afford it that made me more determined than ever to buy it! I purchased it, price unseen or known! I'm not sure I would do that today, but it really empowered me at the time!

The point you made in this post is very relevant and true! You have such a vast background in sales and human behavior. There is a lot of knowledge you possess from your roots as family antique dealers and what you do today as Real Estate Agent. And what sets you apart from other wannabe big shots in the business is that you are kind, honest, good, knowledgable, ethical, and would never take advantage of another human being. I highly recommend all buyers and sellers to hire you.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I always love your comments, thank you. I am not sure I agree but will always accept a compliment. And yes, I think all buyers and sellers can call me.

Hannah Williams maybe, it did not seem to impact sales at the furniture or art gallery. People did not necessarily believe they were being manipulated but more given an opportunity. Dalers often put red dots on items that are sold or reserved and it is always interesting how it generates interest.

People want what they think they cannot have, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 ... you see it in retail of all sorts often ... interesting how the human mind works, isn't it?  My wife and I absolutely love roaming in antique stores and fairs.  A guilty pleasure!  Hope this event is extremely successful for your brother ...
